The Parthenon

The Parthenon was built in honor of the Greek goddess Athena, who the city of Athens was named after. The primary function of the temple was to house a statue of Athena made of gold and ivory. The Parthenon was built on the Athenian Acropolis and is thought to be the most important surviving building of Classical Greece.

The erection of the Parthenon began in 447 BC, under the supervision of the architects Iktinos and Kallikrates. The building was basically completed in 432, but it continued to be decorated until 431 BC. Records show that the most expensive part of the building was the transportation of the stone from Mount Pentelicus to Acropolis.

Several enemy invasions of Greece over time led to the Parthenon having many different uses throughout history. It was used as a treasury for a while before it was converted to a Christian church. In the 1460s, the Parthenon was converted again into a mosque. Later on, it was storage space for ammunition. An explosion caused by the explosives inside destroyed part of the Parthenon and the sculptures that were in it.

The restoration of the Parthenon first began in 1834. The bulk of the work was done during the turn of the century. Between 1923 and 1933, Balanos rebuilt the north and part of the south colonnades. In 1942, Orlandos took over the restoration effort and tried to do the work as closely as the original was done. In 1981, work on the restoration was slowed due to an earthquake that had occurred. The Greek Ministry of Culture oversees the building’s restoration today.

Breaking the Plate, A Greek Tradition

The Greek tradition of breaking a plate has many meanings. It is used to celebrate birthdays, anniversaries and weddings. This act is normally joined by the party yelling “OPA,” as the plate crashes to the ground.

At a wedding, the breaking of a plate happens while the bride, groom and their guests are dancing. This is meant as a way to express kefi, or the spirit of joy. They also break a plate on the doorstep of the newlyweds house to ward off spirits. This only works if it is a controlled break, not a smash. The noise emitted as the plate crashes to the ground, scares away any spirits. Breaking a plate can also be used by two lovers, so no matter how many years pass before they meet again, they will be able to recognize each other by putting the two halves of the plate back together.

Breaking a plate can even be used to gain attention. Sometimes you may find the owner of a Greek restaurant outside smashing a plate on their doorstep to attract customers. Some restaurants even have an area in the store where customers, who wish to, may smash their own plates! Some restaurants do not wish for their customers to smash the plates, especially in Greece. They even go as far as serving their meals on metal plates to prevent it.

Breaking plates is one of the many highlights of Greek tradition that expresses happiness and joy. This tradition is fun and should be done properly. Greeks do not just break plates because they feel like breaking a plate, they do it with love.

Greek Flea Markets

Flea markets, or bazaars, are extremely popular and prevalent in Greece, both to the native and the adventurer. One of the best places to shop there is at a flea market at Monastiraki. One should arrive at the flea market early, due to the large crowds of people shopping. There are many restaurants in the area, but so many shoppers there is little place to take a break when needed. A lot of the market is not a flea market at all. Many of the kiosks are open all week long. But the weekends and Sunday especially are different. All kinds of people are there selling and buying in a flurry of activity.

The oldest neighborhood in Athens, Plaka, is a great place to shop many different items. The visitors and local people alike say that Plaka is their favorite neighborhood, especially for shopping. The Plaka Market has many shops for people to choose from. The merchants there have many different items to offer — just about anything you can imagine. Most of this shopping and selling happens on Sunday. Another enormously popular shop-until-you-drop spot in Athens is Ermou Street. It is, by far, the most popular flea market spot in the city of Athens. Also, while shopping you can sample Greek food prepared by street vendors. Greek natives like to hang around the Plaka Market as much as visitors do.

A great place to bargain shop is at the bazaar in Rhodes, Greece. Rhodes has a large number of bazaars and shops for visitors and locals to shop at and find that perfect something. You can find about anything you want at Rhodes and at a price you will like. There are also many cafes with tiled walls and classic mosaic windows for the exhausted shopper to enjoy.

Greek Style Dance

The Greeks have over four thousand different traditional dances from all regions of the country. Many have been around since ancient times, and they are still performed in Greece and other parts of the world with large Greek communities such as the United States, Canada, and Australia.

The Ancient Greeks believed that dances came from the gods, and performing them was a form of worship. They also believed that the gift of dance was bestowed upon only a few mortals, and it was their job to teach it to others. The religious element of dance took on a new meaning in later centuries when Greece adopted Christianity.

The Greek mainland and the islands have their own distinctive styles that reflect their unique culture and history. For example, the island dances have a flowing, almost water-like quality to them. Dances from areas near the Black Sea like the Pontic are known for being very sharp. Another important traditional dance is the Bacchanalian Dance, which is featured in the Dionysian Festival. The Emmelia dance was used in Greek tragedies, as well as pantomime.

Dances are a key component of Greek social gatherings. Communities come together for celebrations like Easter, the grape harvest, weddings, and various regional festivals. You’re sure to find traditional dancing in all of them. In Greek dancing, there is a strict order to how the dancers are placed. If you’re a tourist, you might be invited to dance, and it’s best if you let your Greek partner take the lead so you don’t end up doing something you’re not supposed to.
